Robert Wheeler Shipley
Robert Wheeler Shipley, devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed peacefully into God’s arms on March 23, 2015, in Houston, Texas, at the age of 86. “Bob” as he was affectionately known, was born in Ennis, Texas, on Dec. 27, 1928. He graduated from Ennis High School and attended Texas A&M University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering before being appointed to the Navel Academy. He graduated in 1952 and spent 20 years in the Navy traveling all over the world, mastering languages along the way. He retired in 1972, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Robert spent 59 years devoted to the love of his life, Jane McBrierty Shipley. He was a doting father to his precious children – sons: Todd Shipley and wife Melissa, Ross Shipley and wife Shaun; Kirk Shipley and wife Leslie; daughter, Kara Childress and husband Ray. He was a loving grandfather to Rachel, Ridge and Riley Shipley; Cole, Evan and Sheridan Shipley; Halie, Lauren and Parker Shipley; and Wells, Sloan, Ford and Knox Childress. He was also a loyal brother to Betty Ludwig of Ennis.
Bob spent his entire life devoted to his church and was a cherished member of the Vestry and Choir, as well as a Lay Reader, also know as “Maestro Bob.” He played several different musical instruments and had a voice like an angel when he sang. He had a huge love of sport, which continued through life as he enjoyed tennis and golf through his later years. He was always the consummate coach for his four children, regardless of the sport.
Bob had a quick wit and a dry sense of humor that kept everyone entertained. He had an enormous heart, and a light within him that shined brightly on anyone he encountered. His easy smile and twinkling blue eyes won the affection of everyone he met along the way. His “come what may” attitude provided everyone a healthy perspective on life. Bob was a southern gentleman to the core with an unparalleled character that was admired, revered and respected by all.
A Celebration of his life was held on Friday, March 27, at 11 a.m., in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, with full military honors.
Willie Alvah Batten
On September 10, 1937, Willie Alvah Batten, namesake of two admired grandfathers, entered this world. Luckily, his 15 month old brother couldn’t say either of those names and dubbed him “BUZZY.” Buzzy was the third son of Bill and Elva, who built a family on the bedrock of love and loyalty, producing Bob, Darrell, Buz, Jerry, Donna, Jim and Sherry. The family roots were deep in Hollis, Oklahoma, where Buz graduated from high school.
Buz moved to Lubbock, where he lived with his Grandma Storrs, who was very influential in his spiritual development (and added two inches to every pair of pants, as he grew to his eventual 6’4” height). It was also in Lubbock where he met Lameda, who had arrived at Texas Tech with a lengthy list of qualifications she was looking for in a spouse. Buz met them all, so they married in a simple ceremony on April 25, 1959.
Three years later Jane joined the couple, followed at two year intervals by Sally, Grace and Patrick. Between Sally and Grace, Buz completed the requirements for his degree in accounting and graduated from Texas Tech.
The Battens moved to Garland in 1969 where Buz earned his CPA and his new professional name, Al. In 1974, the family moved to Ennis, and Al joined Don Hart’s accounting office.
Al became a mainstay in the lives of the youth in Ennis as the owner of the Rolling Lion Skating Rink and an avid supporter of the Ennis Lions. He was also an anchor in the Church of Christ as a deacon and then an Elder, with a special interest in youth and benevolence. He was an officer on the boards of Meals on Wheels and Ennis Work Camp. He brought new meaning to the term, “working board member.” Al had the heart of a servant and touched the lives of countless people in the community.
The Batten family grew exponentially over the next two decades as Jane married Craig and had their children Joel, Susanna, Chloe and Lydia; Sally married Greg and had Holly, Melanie, Ben and Kate; Grace married Thom and had Sam, Alixx and Joe; and Patrick added Lezlie and Brianna. The family grew once more as Joel married Lauren; Susanna married Matt; Holly married Matt, and added Casen; and Kate added Blakely.
Al enjoyed amazing health and vitality for 77 years, before a series of unrelated challenges led to an unexpected and quick decline. His loving and devoted wife, children and grandchildren had the distinct privilege of singing him Home and into the arms of the Father he served his entire life on Friday, April 3, 2015.
Al leaves behind all of his siblings and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; his church family; the Lady Lions Softball Team; and a host of friends who will love and miss him.
On Monday, April 6, 2015, the family of Willie Alvah Batten received friends and celebrated his life with his church family.
