Patricia Mauer, 81, passed away in Dallas, Texas on Thursday, April 11, 2013. Patricia was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 30, 1931 to Victor and Mary (Meyers) Kubu. She grew up in Ohio. She worked for the Children’s Home Society in West Palm Beach as a receptionist. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, and her cats, Chloe and Selena. She is survived by sons: Robert Miles of Ennis and Mark Mauer of Ennis; daughters: Laurie Buchanan of Ennis, Susan Ball of West Palm Beach and Marie Mauer of Corsicana; eight grandchildren: seven great-grandchildren with one more on the way and one brother, Victor Kubu and his wife, Marianne of Phoenix, AZ. Kenneth Earl Smith

Kenneth Earl Smith, of Ennis, passed away Friday, April 12, 2013 in the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Kenneth was born in Wheeler, Texas, the son of James William and Gracie Alice (Risley) Smith August 9, 1934. He grew up in Canadian, Texas, attending schools there and graduated from High School there in 1952. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1956 with a degree in Public Administration. March 9, 1957 he was married to Jane Roberts. They first lived in Waco, Texas then Eagle Lake, Texas before moving to Ennis in 1963. Kenneth spent his professional career in the world of finance, being employed by RPR Investments from 1974 – 76, then moved to Southwest Securities, where he was in Financial Management and Vice-President from 1979 to the time of his death. Being extremely active in civic and church affairs, Kenneth was a member of the First Methodist Church of Ennis, where he served on the local level as Lay Leader, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Administrative Board and Chiarman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. He served the United Methodist Church at the District as a Lay Leader of The Waxahachie District, as Lay Leader of the Central Texas Conference(1986-1988) and was a Delegate to the General Conference (1984) and chaired the deligation in 1988. He was also a member of the Ennis Lions Club, the Ennis Economic Development Committee and from 1963-1968 he was the Ennis City Manager. Additionally, Kenneth was the Waco Assistant City Manager (1956), the Eagle Lake City Manager (1959) and the Weatherford City Manager from 1968-1972. Kenneth is survived by his wife, Jane, of Ennis; son, Jeff Smith and his wife, Leah, of Burleson, Texas; daughter, Karen Alewine and her husband, Kevin, of Tatum, Texas; sister, Jo Ann Meyer, of Childress, Texas; five grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Family visitation was held on Sunday, April 14, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at J. E. Keever Mortuary, Inc., 408 N. Dallas Street, Ennis. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church, 300 North Sherman Street in Ennis, with Rev. Keith Murray and Dr. Jeff Smith officiating. 2064710Jeanette Archibald, 86, passed away in Ennis on Sunday, April 14, 2013. Jeanette was born in Freestone County, Texas on April 2, 1927 to Claude and Mamie (Walker) Laningham. She grew up in Mexia and graduated from Groesbeck High School. On September 20, 1947 she married Henry L. Archibald and they moved to Ennis in 1953. She worked for C.R. Anthony Department Store for several years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ennis. She is survived by two daughters: Sandra Carroll of Ennis and Beverly Donelson of Richardson; grandchildren: Keith Archibald, Lindsay Michel, Clint Donelson and Tyler Donelson; two great-grandchildren along with one sister, Claudine Orman of Rosser. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Henry Archibald, daughter, Deborah Manning, grandson, Joshua Carroll, one brother, Dwayne Laningham and two sisters: Gloria Murray and Bobbie Laningham. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. Mary Helen Blackerby, age 89, of Ennis passed away on April 12, 2013 in Dallas. She was born on May 31, 1923 in Ennis, Texas, the daughter of Frank and Mary Pastorek. Mary Helen married Lloyd Clark Blackerby. She was a lifetime member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church of Ennis. Survivors include two sons; Anthony Birchett and James Blackerby of Ennis; five grandchildren, Christine, Cynthia, James, Jr., Charlotte, and Vickie; six great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren of Ennis. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd Clark Blackerby and son, Lloyd F. Blackerby. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. with a Rosary at 7 P. M. on Thursday, April 18, 2013 in Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Chapel in Ennis, Texas. Miller, JimJames H. “Jim” Miller, affectionately known as “Coach”, 81, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Services will be held 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, Kilgore, Texas. Reverend Dr. Pete Freeman and Reverend David Hampton will officiate. Burial will follow in Danville Cemetery, Kilgore, Texas. He was born March 27, 1932, in Sand Lake, Texas. After graduating from Ennis High School in 1950, Jim worked as a printer for the Ennis Tag and Salesbook Company. On May 30, 1953, Jim married the love of his life, Dianne Louise Percival, before serving our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, Jim attended East Texas State University where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in biology, history, and education. While at East Texas State University, he was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, elected student body president, and earned a football scholarship. In 1991, Jim was inducted into the East Texas State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Mr. Miller began his teaching and coaching career at Corsicana High School. He coached at Jacksonville, Corpus Christi, and Henderson High Schools. In 1967, Jim joined the staff of Kilgore College serving as assistant football coach and physical education instructor. In 1976, he was named head football coach at Kilgore College where he continued to serve until his retirement in 1992. Jim still holds the distinction of having the longest tenure as head football coach in the history of Kilgore College. In his retirement, he loved to hunt, fish, and garden. He was an avid reader and enjoyed the time he shared with family and friends. Coach Miller was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church where he was active in the Master’s Sunday School class. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Percival Miller, of Kilgore; son, Wade Miller, of Marshall, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresea and Tom Whaley of Marshall, Texas, and Stacy and Robby LaFleur of Kilgore, Texas; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Johnnie Lee Miller of Richland Chambers Lake, Texas, and Danny and Ellen Miller of Ennis, Texas; a sister, Peggy Roberson, of Mingus, Texas; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Miller, of Ennis, Texas; and his sister-in-law, Eva Miller. Pallbearers were Steve Hancock, Bobby Bittick, Chris McDaniel, Wesley McDaniel, Blayne Montalbano, Heath LaFleur, Ray Woodard, and Dean McNew. Former players, coaches, and members of the Master’s Sunday School class served as honorary pallbearers. She grew up in Ennis and attended school in Ennis. On November 25, 1977 she married M.D. Dixon and they made their home in Garrett then Alma, Bardwell and finally to Avalon. She worked for Atlas Sound for over twenty years. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Ennis. She loved spending time and taking care of her grandchildren. She is survived by one son, David Dixon and his wife, Jennifer of Avalon; one daughter, Susie Dixon; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, M.D. Dixon on March 21, 2007, two sisters, one brother and one daughter, Misty Dawn Dixon. On December 19, 1960 she married Harry L. Rogers and they made their home originally in Corsicana then to Munich, Germany while Harry served in the United States Army and then returned to Corsicana in 1962. She worked for Roy’s Café for over twenty-five years as a waitress. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Corsicana and a member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading. She was a master Peanut Brittle maker and she enjoyed sports, especially the Cowboys and Rangers. She also enjoyed going to her coffee group at the Ennis Truck Stop. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Honza of Ennis; two grandsons and their families, Lance and his wife Melissa and their daughter Kathryn of Ennis, and Michael and his wife Lauren and their children Ryan and Georgia Kate of Austin; one brother, Alvie O’Neal and his wife Jerra of Corsicana; two sisters: Tiny Lou Wilson of Groesbeck and Nelda May Oliver and her husband Douglas of Houston along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, twelve siblings, and her husband, Harry L. Rogers. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. Mary Andrews Patterson, 82, passed away in Dallas, Texas on Thursday, April 25. 2013. Mary was born in Byrd, Texas on July 26, 1930 to Earl and Minnie (Pickering) Andrews. She grew up in Byrd and graduated from Ennis High School. In 1948 she married Fred Patterson and they made their home in Dallas, Texas. She was a member of the Western Park Baptist Church and presently the Jesus Name Church. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and dominos. The joy of her life was her family especially her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, LuAnne Holmes and her husband, Don Holmes of Duncanville, grandchildren: Adam Holmes of Los Angeles and Allison Gaskey of McKinney along with one great-grandson Gabriel Gaskey. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, Jack Andrews and Thomas Andrews. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. in the J.E. Marty A. Brown, Sr., age 63, of Wichita Falls, Texas, passed away Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013, at Hospice of Wichita Falls. Graveside services, with military honors, will be conducted on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas, with Reese Brown, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City, Texas. Mr. Brown was born September 7, 1949 in Ennis, Texas to Allec Andrew Brown and Martha Pauline (King) Brown. He attended Ennis High School and Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He resided in Ennis until 1975 and had been a resident of Wichita Falls since 1989. He was a Disabled Veteran of the U.S. Army and served in combat near Phu Bai during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife Rose, of Wichita Falls; two sons, Marty A. Brown, Jr. of Wichita Falls and Mark A. Brown and his wife, Melanie of Scotland, Texas; two brothers, Reese Brown and his wife, Cathy of Hawkins, Texas, and Dale K. Brown and his wife, Evangeline of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren, Marty A. Brown, III of San Antonio, Texas, Mark Arnold of Burkburnett, Texas, Mykeltie Brown of Electra, Texas, and Laynie and Linden Brown, both of Scotland, Texas. George W. Garrard

2076273George W. Garrard, 83, passed away in Ennis on April 27, 2013. G.W. was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on November 1, 1929, to Allen V. and Ruth Gates Garrard. He graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1947 and Stephen F. Austin University in 1955, where he earned a degree in Agriculture. He served proudly in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict. In 1955, he started his career with the USDA as a Soil and Water Conservationist in Ennis, where he assisted land owners and farmers in Ellis County. He retired after 30 years of service. G.W. married Agnes Ann Honza on February 9, 1957, and Ennis has been their home. Before retirement, G.W. was involved in Boy Scouts, serving as a Cub Master and on Special Achievement Committees, where he assisted young men in achieving various merit badges. He also taught Junior High Boys Sunday School classes at Tabernacle Baptist Church for 20 years. Two of his students became family members: son-in-law Lance Ueberroth and nephew Bobby Penrod. He enjoyed taking his classes on hunting outings, fishing trips, and cook outs. After retirement, his joy was going out to their acreage in Kaufman County, tending to his garden and horses. Many family outings, trail rides, birthday parties, and church socials were held there. He was a longtime member of Tabernacle Church and later joined Cowboy Church of Ennis. He was a member of NARFE Chapter 1191 (National Active and Retired Federal Employees), serving as president and Public Relations Chairman. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Agnes; daughters: Amy and husband Jim Easter of Burleson and Gayle and husband Lance Ueberroth of Ennis (Telico); three grandchildren: Adam Chavoya, Ethan Chavoya and Rebecca Chavoya; sister, Nita Weatherby of Lufkin; brother, Allen T. Garrard and wife, Judy of Granbury and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Rick Chavoya; grandson, Aaron Chavoya; sister and brother-in-law, Dixie and Gene Burns of Nacogdoches; brother-in-law , Rankin Weatherby of Lufkin. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the J.E. Keever Mortuary of Ennis. A Celebration of his life will take place on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the J.E. James Kenneth Ward

James Kenneth Ward died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Sunday, April 28, 2013. Ken was born on June 10, 1938 in Belton, Texas to J.T. Ward and Hazel Keetch Ward. Ken graduated from Belton High School in 1956 and attended the University of North Texas on a basketball scholarship. He graduated from UNT in 1960 with a degree in banking and finance. His first job was as a federal bank examiner working out of the Dallas office. In 1963 he became the operations officer for Citizens National Bank in Ennis, Texas. In his twenties he became president of Citizens National Bank serving from 1967 to 1985. During this time he was a community leader encouraging industrial development and growth in Ennis. He had an amazing entrepreneurial spirit, which brought industry and jobs to Ellis County. In 1971 Governor Dolph Briscoe chose Ken as the Industrial Developer of the Year for the state of Texas. Due to end-stage renal disease, in 1986 Ken, receiving a kidney from his oldest son Kevin, had a kidney transplant. After the transplant Ken lived 27 years doing the things he loved. In the late 80’s he became active in real estate and property development. He enjoyed playing golf, riding his bike, and taking cruises with his wife. Ken is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Janet Todd Ward, his sons Kevin Kenneth Ward, Gregory Graves Ward, William Gary Ward, and grandson Nicklaus Gregory Ward, all of Dallas. In addition, he is survived by his younger siblings Bill Ward of Dallas and Betty Martinez of San Angelo. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 1 at 2 PM at Good Shepherd Anglican Church, 915 Old Straus Road, Cedar Hill, TX 75104. There will be a reception following the service in the Parrish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the YMCA or Salvation Army of Dallas.
