Fern Dell Hunter

Fern Dell Hunter is the daughter of the late Jake and Haydie McNeil. She is a native of Ennis, Texas, and the valedictorian of George Washington Carver High School Class of 1944. Later she received her bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M College of Texas on May 23, 1948. She served as an English, Typing, Music, and French teacher at George Washington Carver High and Ennis High Schools for 35 years.

Fern served on a variety of community boards including the Ennis Public Library, Ennis Evening Lions Club, Ennis Retired School Personnel Association, and was an active participant with the American Heart Association.

At an early age, Fern gave her life to Christ and has since been a life-long member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Deaconess, sang in the choir, and was a Faithful Servant of the Lord.

Fern was preceded in death by her late husband, Melvin H. Hunter Jr., who she was married to for 58 years. Fern is survived by her children: Art (Delores), Melva (Darryl), Calissa, and Brenda Bell; grandchildren: Artina (Martin), Joshua, Caleb, Camesha (Chad), Shameka (Ryan), Shaneese, Melody, Brandon (Bethany), and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Viewing is on Monday, Sept. 21, 6-8 p.m., and the Funeral is Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 10:30 a.m., both at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 608 E. Loggins, Ennis, TX 75119.
