Jane was born in Everman, Texas, to Samuel Arnold Roberts and Viola Gertrude (Ling) Roberts on September 20, 1932. She spent her childhood in the rural community of Mooreville near Chilton, Texas. She attended the one room schoolhouse in Mooreville for her primary education, and then she fulfilled her secondary education and graduated from Chilton High School in 1950.
Jane attended Mary Hardin Baylor, Baylor University and completed her training through Four C Business College (originally named Central City Commercial College) while working for Citizen’s National Bank of Waco. At the bank, she worked with new accounts, and one of those accounts was for a young new assistant city manager named Kenneth Smith. They fell in love and were married on March 9, 1957.
They moved five times throughout Kenneth’s career as city manager, living in Waco, Eagle Lake, Ennis, Weatherford and finally back to Ennis, as Kenneth transitioned to a career in public finance. During that time, Jane was involved in various activities supporting her children and her community. Those included Garden Club, Band Boosters and countless trips to ball games, junior high and high school concerts, plays and marching contests. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Ennis and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. She also spent several years serving as an instructional aide in Ennis ISD in both elementary and high school.
She loved playing bridge, and in the last year, she made many friends through bingo, dominoes, bridge and sing-a-longs at Wesleyan.
Jane is survived by her son, Jeff Smith, and his wife, Leah, of Georgetown, Texas; daughter, Karen, and her husband, Kevin, of Tatum, Texas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
